Cognitive Friction
Definition
Cognitive friction is the mental effort required to understand what a clip is about in the first second.
Full explanation
Cognitive friction measures how hard a viewer must work to parse a clip’s premise. High friction, unclear subject, cluttered frame, or ambiguous hook, increases scroll-away rate. Low friction gives the brain an instant “this is for me” signal.
Why it matters
The first second is a comprehension test. Friction kills thumbstop before retention even starts.
